At the Center for Facial Plastic Surgery and Laser Skin Care, Albany Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr. Falk provides comprehensive laser services including laser hair removal for all skin types. Both lasers and light sources can be used for permanent reduction of unwanted facial and body hair. Laser hair reduction is accomplished using light energy to target the growing hair follicles and render them inactive. Only those hairs that are actively growing at a given time are susceptible to laser destruction, and so a series of treatments are necessary to eliminate most hairs. Generally, between 4-6 treatments are necessary. Pigment/color is necessary for the destruction of hair follicles, therefore, hair that is white or gray is not appropriate for laser hair removal. These patients may need alternative methods for hair removal including electrolysis.

It is important to realize that there is no single device that is ideal for all individuals. Rather, it is a balance between efficacy and safety. The “safest” lasers for hair removal on all skin types (including black skin types) is the 1064 nm Nd:YAG, although this wavelength may not be the optimal choice for individuals with lighter skin and hair color who perhaps would achieve more rapid clearance with a shorter wavelength device such as the 880 nm diode lasers (Lightshear), 775nm Gentlelase (Candela) or a pulsed light device. We tailor our treatments for hair removal based on individual characteristics of skin color and hair type.
